Ice, ice baby - Part One

A quick survey of the best ice-creams in Budapest
01 July 2019 - 30 September 2019
Summer is in the air, and there is no one who wouldn't welcome gladly a soothing cone of this delicious, cool material to combat the heat: ice cream is like a universal language, everybody likes it regardless of age and nationality. Fortunately people with diabetes or on a diet can also indulge themselves as there are lots of sugar free versions. This list is far from being complete, but if you go and try any of the following brands you surely won't be disappointed, and of course feel free to discover further ice creameries to your taste. Remember: you can't buy happiness, but you can buy ice cream and that's kind of the same thing.
Levendula Kézműves Fagylaltozó: One of the pioneers in Hungary regarding healthier but delicious ice creams: they work only with quality ingredients (lemon from Siracusa, hazelnut from Piedmont, mineral water Szentkirályi for the sorbets, etc.) and they also offer a great variety of sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan ice creams. The flavours vary according to season, among the most acclaimed ones are the elderflower-lemon and the lilac flowers in the springtime, the strawberry-ginger and the raspberry-mint in summer, while autumn brings the sublime mixture of othello grapes and walnut. The plucky ones can also taste their wheat beer, gorgonzola, camembert or lavender ice creams.

Hideg Nyalat: Health consciousness carried out to the highest standard. They deserve closer attention due to their charming name (which could be translated as 'Cold Tongueful') and also because they only work with ingredients that can be fitted into a paleo diet. It means that all of their ice creams are gluten- and sugar-free without food additives. Instead of milk or water they use coconut milk as a base, mixing it with cashew nuts and different selected fresh fruits, Vanilla or Belgian chocolate depending on the flavour they want to achieve. Among the most acclaimed flavours are the blackberry-chocolate, the raspberry-cheescake, the acai berry fruit plate and the Ganoderma coffee ice cream. There is also a home delivery service (házhozszállítás) if you want to order online, or visit Vegan Garden at Dob street 40. and ask for Hideg Nyalat.

Bonbonier: This new gem of Király street opened in 2017. It is a charming little chocolaterie which can already boast of several awards and general recognition. Their ice-cream is strictly additive-free, and based on quality ingredients. No wonder that the pear-vanilla sorbet, and the vanilla and hazelnut praline flavours have all won the Great Taste Awards last year. They are not afraid to experiment with new things, they aim at making their range of ice-creams really colorful so it is not unusual that they come up with unique flavours like chocolate-maracuja or sour cherry-stracciatella. You can also find sugar -and lactose free products. Sometimes they ask for the opinion of the public so you can vote on their Facebook page which flavour would you prefer. It is absolutely worth a minute to look through their coffee and chocolate selection as well.
