Usually it is quite daring to regard a new film as an instant classic, but in this case we can declare rightfully that Ari Aster's nerve-racking horror 'Hereditary' has a place beside the great classics of the genre, like 'The Exorcist' or 'Rosemary's baby'.
It is the American director's first feature film and it follows the desintegration of the Graham family. Nothing feels the same after mysterious Granny dies, and the members of the family are unable to deal with this loss as the grandmother had a hold on their lives in a strange way. Moreover, they begin to unravel some terrifying secrets about their ancestry, and soon the Grahams have to realize that they are unable to control the situation.

The film works as a drama about loss and grief, but also as a psychological horror which turns out to be particularly scary and unsettling because for a long time we can't really decide about what we see, as it may all be the hallucination of a troubled mind.
