Writer-director Naomi Kawase’s latest feature is a picturesque story set in an ancient Japanese forest sprinkled with supernatural elements, plus featuring the always interesting Juliette Binoche.
Silent forest ranger Tomo and French journalist Jeanne become romantically entangled when the woman suddenly shows up in the forest looking for a special plant called “vision” that can cure pain. Past and present slowly mingle together, seasons pass in beautifully photographed pictures as we try to understand the meaning of life, or at least the meaning of this film: if the viewer can catch the rhythm of Kawase's storytelling then the experience can be a compelling one, but it can also be annoying and incomprehensible to other more impatient spectators.
