Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette was one of the most intriguing figures of the XX century: even if you haven't read any of her works, you have certainly seen movie classics like Gigi with Audrey Hepburn, or Chéri with Michelle Pfeiffer, both based on Colette's novels.
Her private life was also rather interesting, so finally here comes a classy period piece about Colette herself, a biopic starring Keira Knightley, one of Hollywood's most current actresses who has proved her talent several times in this genre. The story follows the artistic and personal evolution of a bright young woman: she begins her journey as an enthusiastic country girl who marries an acclaimed writer and together they move to Paris. Her husband persuades her to ghostwrite for him, so Colette creates the semi-autobiographical 'Claudine' series, which is to become a great success, initially under her husband's name. But the truth couldn't remain a secret forever: discovering her own bisexuality and theatrical inclinations helped Colette to rebel against exploitation and oppression as an author and also as a woman. In the end, Colette became an icon, one of the great reformers of literature, fashion, and our perception of the roles of women. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948.
