Imagine there's no Beatles - it's hard even if you try. The romantic comedy of scriptwriter Richard Curtis and director Danny Boyle is based on this rather unorthodox idea.
A likable but unsuccessful young singer-songwriter wakes up one day to find that he is the only one who remembers the Fabulous Four. After the first shock he realizes that this is his only chance to finally be famous: he starts to introduce the Beatles' songs to the world as his own creations. The success is guaranteed, our protagonist Jack is on his way to superstardom. But is that really what he wants? What about the awkward, platonic love affair with Ellie, his old friend and manager (Lily James)? And what about his friends? For how long can he lie to everybody? The musical makes the best of the frantic idea of a Beatle-less world, and manages to excite our curiosity until the end. Needless to say that the songs work wonderfully (they always will). Himesh Patel is a credible protagonist, Lily James is as charming as ever (though the chemistry is not exactly working between the two). Ed Sheeran plays a funny version of himself (suddenly realizing he can't compete with the Beatles) so Yesterday is a perfect summer movie experience and a half-hilarious, half-sentimental homage to the greatest band in the history of pop music.
